Two classical scholars and a leading authority on the impact of science on American thought have been appointed to full professorships in the University, Dean Bundy announced yesterday.

Wendell V. Clausen, associate professor of Greek and Latin at Amherst College, and Cedric H. Whitman '38, associate professor of Greek and Latin at Harvard, will each become full professors on July 1. Donald H. Fleming, visiting lecturer this year from Yale, will become professor of History at the same time.

Sixteen professors and two University instructors are among 321 scholars and artists receiving awards this year from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. They are Alfred H. Conrad '45, assistant professor of Economics; Sterling Dow '25, John E. Hudson Professor of Archaeology; and Otto Eckstein, assistant professor of Economics.

Also, John K. Fairbank '29, professor of History and Associate Director of the Center for East Asian Studies; Marshall Fixman, instructor in Chemistry; Clarke T. Gray, Leonard Wood Memorial Research Associate in Biochemistry; Lowell P. Hager, assistant professor of Chemistry; and Raimundo Lida, professor of Romance Languages and Literatures.

Lyman H. Loomis, professor of Mathematics; Robert G. McCloskey, professor of Government; Richard H. Milburn '48, assistant professor of Physics; Pauline A. Miller, research associate in Bacteriology; and William Paul, assistant professor of Solid State Physics, were honored.

Other University scholars included Karl Sax, professor of Botany; Judith N. Shklar, instructor in Government; Herbert J. Spiro '50, assistant professor of Government; Krister Stendahl, John H. Morison Professor of New Testament studies; and Lily R. Taylor, visiting professor of Classics.
