Crimson Netmen Blank Army, 9-0

Sweeping through with the loss of just one set in sixteen matches--seven of them unofficial--the varsity tennis team outclassed Army, 9 to 0, at Soldiers Field Saturday.

Captain Ned Weld, playing first singles, led off the rout when he took less then a half hour to dispose of Cadet lefthander Hank Fisher, 6-2, 6-0. Weld started fairly slowly, as he had against M.I.T.'s Raul Karman last Wednesday, allowing Fisher's errors to give him the opening games. But in the second set the Crimson captain was very sharp, and, with his service clicking beautifully, he ran through Fisher in short order.

Army took its only set at second singles, as Jim O'Connell, a strong player with a fine serve, lost to Bob Bowditch, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. Bowditch, after a lot of difficulty with O'Connell's service in the first set, found his touch and overwhelmed the Cadet in the next two sets, although O'Connell made very few errors throughout the match.

The varsity won the remaining singles with little trouble. Tim Gallwey beat Don Hubbard, 6-3, 6-2, Fred Vinton took Lee Sager, 6-1, 6-0, Jorge Lemann defeated Rush Yelverton, 6-2, 6-2, and Bill Wood blasted John Wood, 6-0, 6-0.

In the doubles coach Jack Barnaby rested his first pair, Weld and Bowditch, and moved Lemann and Bill Wood--the new second team--up to number one. After a shaky start, they beat Fisher and O'Connell, 6-4, 6-1. Gallwey and Vinton, playing second, routed Sager and Bob Chelberg, 6-1, 6-0, and Pete Smith and Bob Schwartzman, at number three, completed the shutout with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hubbard and Yelverton.

Although only six singles and three doubles count for Eastern Intercollegiate League standings, the two teams played an additional five singles and two doubles, with the varsity sweeping all seven unofficial matches. Jim Cameron, Laurie Pratt, Pete Smith, Scott Custer and Langden Smith posted singles victories, all in straight sets, while the doubles teams of Pratt-Cameron and Langden Smith and Custer swept their matches against fairly weak opposition.

The varsity will meet Amherst in a home contest on Wednesday before going to Annapolis Friday for an important Eastern Intercollegiate match with Navy.
