Fencers Drop Match To Yale Varsity, 18-9

Yale's foil team, led by Peter Pohly, overwhelmed Crimson fencers Bill Trebilcock, Phil Charat, and Dave Johnson to pace an unexpectedly decisive 18-9 victory over the varsity fencing squad Saturday at the I.A.B. The Bulldogs won eight of nine matches against a surprisingly weak Crimson foil lineup, ending hope for the varsity's first Ivy League win of the year.

Trebilcock, who entered the Yale contest with a 10-2 record in Ivy competition, probably lost any chance for All-Ivy honors with a dismal 0-3 showing. In the sole varsity foil triumph, Johnson defeated Eli captain Hank Powell.

Although Tony Enders took two of his three bouts, the varsity bowed in epee, 6 to 3. Jon Piel and Manuel Cabral each captured two matches in sabre as the Crimson eked out a 5-4 margin for its only winning performance.

The Yardlings lost to Yale by an identical 18-9 margin. The Freshmen triumphin in sabre, 6 to 3, but Yale countered with a 6-3 foil win and a smashing 9-0 victory in epee.

In the New England Intercollegiates held at the University of Connecticut, meanwhile, varsity fencer Jim Roberts became the New England epee champion by beating Brandeis' Mark Friedman 5 to 0 in a fence-off after both had complied 11-3 records.

Alan Garaner and varsity manager Gerry Kelly posted a 17-11 mark in foil for the best Crimson effort. Roberts and Alan Choate added 16 triumphs in epee, and Lajos Heder and Bob Whallon took 13 of 28 sabre bouts.
