John Davis, the Crimson's number six man, won the consolation championship at the Intercollegiate Squash Tournament held this weekend at Princeton. Davis beat Yale's number four player John Oettinger, in the final round in an exciting five-game match.
On his way to the consolation title, Davis eliminated Navy's fourth man, John Harmuth, in the semifinals, and he also defeated number five Midshipman John Lattimer in the championship tournament. These losses along with Wally Stimpson's consolation conquest of Navy captain Tony LaSalla, would seem to give strength to the feeling that Navy is vastly less effective away from its steamy, noisy, cramped courts.
In the championship tourney, Gerry Emmet played very well, reaching the quarterfinals before bowing to Princeton's Steve Vehslage, the eventual winner, in three hard-fought games.
Vehslage's triumph in the finals, where he whipped Howe, 15-8, 18-17, 10-15, 15-8, gave Princeton the team championship by one point over Yale.
In intercollegiate ratings decided this weekend, Crimson captain Charlie Hamm, even though he did not participate in the tournament, was placed sixth, and Emmet took eighth ranking.
