The varsity wrestling team will close out a season of disappointments and near-misses this afternoon at New Haven against a strong Yale squad that must rate as a heavy favorite.
Yale, supporting a 4-1 Ivy League record, has at least three wrestlers considered championship threats in next weekend's Easterns at Cornell. They are 123-pounder Andy Fitch, Hardy Will--at 177--and heavy weight Bing Sherrill.
Will should face a tough match and possible defeat from the varsity's Bob Foster. Foster, who absorbed his first loss in three years of dual meet competition on a freak forfeit against Brown last week, has eight victories this season and is also a strong candidate for an Eastern title.
Crimson captain Joe Noble, with a 9-1 season record, should rack up another victory at 157 against Yale's Alec Slaughter. Elsewhere, the picture is not so clear, except that Fitch appears to have a distinct edge over the varsity's Dave Skeels at 123. Sherrill, although considered a top Eastern heavyweight, may have some trouble with Ted Robbins, who has won six of his nine matches.
At 130, Crimson sophomore Carl Kludt will wrestle Bob Kramer, while John Watkins meets Eli Tim Welles at 137. Nick Estabrook at 147 and senior King Holmes at 167 round out the varsity line-up, facing Bob Schoeneman and Tom Miller, respectively.
The Crimson freshmen, defeated only by Pennsylvania, also wrestle Yale tomorrow. Starters for Johnny Lee's team will be: Bob DeVore (123), George Doub (130), Bill Smith (137), Tom Owsley (147), Steve Schultz (157), Lee Freeman (167), Charlie Long (177), and heavyweight Harlan Noel.
