Senator Urges More U.S. Aid for Schools

United States Senator Ralph Yarborough yesterday called for more Federal aid to education. In a speech sponsored by the Harvard Young Democratic Club, he said no controls should be placed on such aid, even in the case of segregated schools.

The Texas Democrat also termed the loyalty oath amendments to the National Defense Education Act as "secondary to the main objective of the bill," and a necessary compromise to get it passed. He was co-author of the bill's college loan provisions.

In the question period, Yarborough termed educational aid to other nations the most valuable help this country can give. Citing "mismanagement and misgovernment" in the field of foreign aid, he said that the proposed $3.9 million is more than enough to do a good job.
