A strong Army team that may well be the best in the East soundly defeated the varsity track squad 64 1/3 to 44 2/3 last Saturday at Briggs Cage. Several Crimson performers came through unexpectedly, but failure to dominate its really strong events caused the varsity's downfall.
In the closest race of the afternoon, Crimson miler Jed Fitzgerald overhauled his favored opponent, Dick Healy, with 50 yards to go and finished first in 4:20.5. The varsity's Bob Downs upset pre-meet predictions to win the broad jump.
Tom Blodgett took the pole vault for the Crimson at 13 feet, thus tying the meet record, and the mile relay squad had a surprisingly easy time in whipping the Army quartet.
The varsity was far less successful when favored, however. No Crimson high jumper cleared six feet as Army took 6 1/3 of the nine points, and the varsity virtually gave away seven points in the hurdles and dash.
Joel Landau and Sandy Dodge of the Crimson tied meet standards in the hurdle and dash events, and Cadet two-miler Dick Greene established a new mark with a 9:23.3 clocking. Shot putter Keith Nance and Bill Hanne in the 1000 were other Army record-breakers.
