Led by an exceptional performance from center Griff McClellan, the varsity basketball team defeated a favored Pennsylvania squad 69 to 60 Saturday night in the I.A.B. Trailing at halftime, 34 to 30, the Crimson battled back with more accuracy, more speed, more hustle and more points than the Quakers to take its fourth Ivy League victory against seven losses.
McClellan turned in undoubtedly his best game of the season, notching 17 points--12 of them in the second frame--to lead both teams in the scoring column. Also, his rebounding was much sharper and more energetic than on any previous occasion this season.
Four other varsity players--Bob Bowditch, captain Bob Repetto, George Harrington, and Mike Donohue--all hit in double figures, in what was essentially a team victory. Paul Rubincam, a substitute forward, led the Quakers with 13 points. Penn's leading scorer, Al Schwait, was out with a broken arm.
Crimson Starts Slowly
Following a strong show against Princeton Friday night, the varsity started slowly, trailing the Quakers for most of the first half. Penn pulled ahead 40 to 33 in the early stages of the second period, but the Crimson rapidly closed this gap. McClellan's jump shot at 7 1/2 minutes put the varsity ahead 43-41.
Penn regained a 48-47 lead at the quarter mark on Bob Mlkvy's set shot, but lost it immediately when Bowditch hit for one of his usually accurate one-handers. The varsity never lost the lead thereafter, consistently dominating play from this point on.
