In the first evening of soliciting Monday night, the Harvard Combined Charities Drive netted contributions totaling $5108, Richard Crystal '62 and Howard J. Philips '62, co-chairmen of the drive, reported yesterday after a final tally. This represents more than one-third of the announced goal of $15,000, with about 30 per cent of the students contacted.
Adams House, last year the lowest House in donations, jumped off to first place in competition for the prize for the largest per capita contribution. Adams House donations totaled $415, with the average gift approximately $8.95. Quincy took second place with an average donation of $7.60.
According to the co-chairmen, the greatest disappointment of the generally encouraging evening came at Lowell House and Dudley. Contributions at Lowell, which finished a strong second last year, averaged only $5.20. Dudley House returns netted a total of just $19, due in part to the difficulty in contacting the commuters.
Crystal explained that in addition to direct solicitation a mail campaign is being directed at the non-residents.
Returns at 1 a.m. indicated donations last night amount to between $3900 and $4000, a considerable drop from Monday's collections.
