Track Team Crushes B.U., 81-28; Doten, Nichols Set New Standards

It seems as though the B.U. meet each December is Record Smashing Night at Briggs Cage. Last year seven meet marks and numerous other standards fell, and this season's clash was even better. The score for the evening: three Harvard records, four University indoor marks, four Cage standards, four varsity meet records, a freshman Cage standard, and three freshman meet marks.

Out of all this the varsity emerged with a smashing 81-28 triumph. After 30 minutes, the outcome of the encounter was never in doubt.

In the battle of titans, the 35-lb. weight throw, B.U.'s John Lawlor came through with a heave of 61 ft., 5 3/4 in. to take first place and set meet and Cage marks. Stan Doten of the Crimson, finishing second, set new Harvard and University indoor marks with a 57 ft. 3/4 in. toss. A fine 56 ft., 1 3/4 in. effort by the varsity's Ed Bailey was lost in the commotion.

With a 52 ft., 3 1/4 in. performance, Crimson shot putter Sarge Nichols broke the University record by a quarter-inch, and established an indoor mark, a meet record, and a Briggs Cage standard as well. Key Kean soared 6 ft., 3 3/4 in. in the high jump to tie the Harvard record and set marks for University indoor performance, the Cage, and the meet.

The varsity's Tom Blodgett was the only double winner. He tied Harvard indoor, Briggs Cage, and meet standards with a 13 ft., 6 in. effort in the pole vault, but this was perhaps not his most impressive feat. He also took the measure of Terrier Art Reed, the New England champion, in the hurdles, with a good time of 5.5.

Crimson Wins Relays

Frank Yeomans took the dash in 4.8, and Pat Liles turned in a fine 1:15.3 clocking to win the 600, for two more Crimson firsts. In a race of teammates, the varsity's Gus Schumacher edged Art Cahn in a close 2:19.3 1000. Mark Mullin ran his old nemesis Art Freeman into the ground to take the mile, and Greg Baldwin added five points in the two-mile. Bob Downs won the broad jump, and the Crimson totaled 10 points in the relays.

The Yardlings took the freshman meet 56 3/4 to 52 1/4 when B.U. had to forfeit the climatic two-mile relay. Covering the 600 in 1:15.6, the Crimson's Lowell Davidson set up new freshman Cage and meet records.
