Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Converted guard Bob Bowditch led the varsity basketball team to a tight, 53-52 victory over Northeastern last night.
Bowditch scored 18 points, sparked a first-half comeback, and hit for key plays at crucial points to give the Crimson just enough to win.
Beginning dismally, the varsity trailed, 17-9, at the ten minute mark, playing with little apparent concern and almost no rebounding. By contrast, the Huskies had brought an impromptu band along to cheer them in this cross-town rivalry.
Bowditch Scores
Bowditch scored two field goals to cut the Husky lead to 21-19. With a minute to go and the Crimson behind, 29-23, Bryant Danner then scored on a long hook, and Bowditch on a one-hander. The varsity might have tied the score at half-time had not Bowditch's pass downcourt gone wild.
After intermission, a rejuvenated Crimson promptly took the lead, only to exchange it several times before running up a 45-39 margin just before the quarter. Four foul shots and a tip-in brought the Huskies to a 48-47 lead at 16:40.
A minute later, Bowditch drove down the right side (he is left-handed), under the backboard, and eased in a backhander to put the varsity ahead for keeps. Fouled on the play, Bowditch had no trouble scoring one more. He is 12 for 12 at the free throw line this season.
Husky Guards Tally
As expected, Husky guards Mike Dvorchak and Dick Brown led their scoring with 15 apiece. The Crimson's Bryant Danner, playing center in a zone defense, successfully checked the opponent's forward line.
The victory gives the varsity a 4-1 record, losing only to Wesleyan. The game was Northeastern's fifth, and the fifth to be decided by three points or less.
The Crimson plays Tufts tonight at 8:15 at the I.A.B.
