Yardlings Crush Brown, 20-6, After Three Scoreless Quarters

Cheered in the third period by news of the varsity's unexpected win over Penn, the freshman football team rallied back from a 6-0 deficit in the last quarter to defeat Brown, 20 to 6, Saturday at Providence.

The Crimson went ahead to ahead stay in the early seconds of the final period when quarterback Hobie Armstrong intercepted a Brown pass around midfield. After a first down, the Yardling ace charged off tackle at the 20-yard line for a touchdown. Gary Barth's extra-point kick put the freshmen ahead, 7 to 6.

After kicking off, the Yardlings forced the Bruins back 32 yards in three plays, and Brown had to punt. Armstrong ran the ball back to the home team's 35-yard line and set up another Yardling touchdown. Three plays later, Fred Taylor scored on a three-yard drive. After Barth failed to convert, the score stood at 13 to 6.

Hatch Scores From 20

The Crimson, however, was not through for the afternoon. Center Ken Klinebub snatched a Bruin pass on the 40 and pushed to the 20-yard line; and after the officials called back a touchdown run on the next play because of illegal use of hands, Hatch tried again. He scored on an off-tackle play to put the climax to a 20-6 triumph.

The sole Brown touchdown came late in the second period after the Bruins had lost four yards in three plays. Rolling through a muddy Harvard defense, Cub quarterback Dennis Hauflaire snagged a pass from tailback Dennis Redding and galloped into the end zone. Brown missed the conversion, but seemed on its way to a victory when the half ended.

Receiving the opening kickoff of the game, the Crimson marched rapidly from its own 40 to the Brown five-yard line, only to have the home team find a loose ball in the mud in the end zone.

After holding the Cubs on four downs, the Yardling eleven returned a punt to the 40. The visitors fumbled again, however, after a long ground-gaining attack. This pattern of kick and counter kick continued throughout the rest of the first half.

The Yardling eleven also had another touchdown called back by a penalty. In the second period Armstrong crossed the goal line after an 85-yard punt return, but a clipping violation called the ball back again to the 12. From there, the Yardlings eventually had to punt out, allowing the Bruins to start their scoring march.
