New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller yesterday declared that neither the loyalty oath nor the disclaimer affidavit provisions of the National Defense Education Act infringe on student rights.
At a student rally which welcomed him to Providence Airport yesterday, Rockefeller commented, "Any student who enjoys the advantages and human dignity of living in this great country should be glad to take an oath which shows his belief in its principles."
Asked if he planned to visit Harvard during his campaign, Rockefeller retorted, "Which campaign?" He said that President Eisenhower was considering several individuals as possible GOP nominees. "I have been on a list," the Governor stated.
Visits California
Rockefeller said that he felt no political wounds from his recent junket into vice-President Nixon's home territory. He described the California venture as one of a series of trips which he plans to make before deciding whether or not to become a candidate.
Coming to Providence for the New England Press Association Banquet, Rockefeller waved and grinned to a crowd of 200, mostly students from Harvard and Brown.
The group braved zero weather to parade signs saying, "Put Rocky in the Kitchen and Cook Mr. K's Goose," and "Nobody's for Rocky but the People."
