NSA Sub-Group Approves Plan Conceived by Council Observer

The National Student Association's largest sub-group, the New England Region, has adopted almost in toto "Project Awareness," a plan proposed by Eugene H. Zagat, Jr. '61, former Student Council vice-president, and one of the observers the Council sent to last summer's NSA convention.

At the same time, the conclave of representatives from New England Colleges voted Federal Aid to Education as their "theme issue" for 1959-60.

Among Zagat's proposals accepted at the meeting are encouragement of: research on an annual theme by delegates and students; informal discussion, forums and official action by student councils; participation in these discussions by student political clubs and groups; attendance by guests other than students at the Regional and National Congresses; and use of the Region to carry the theme issue to the National Congress and to serve as an information source at the Congress.

Region Considers Debate, Referendum

In addition to accepting Project Awareness, the Regional Congress, held at Dartmouth last weekend, "discussed informally" the Harvard-initiated proposals to encourage a written debate on the theme topic in student newspapers of member colleges, and to submit to a general student referendum on each campus the resolutions of the Region's spring Plenary meeting.

According to Zagat, the chances are quite favorable that the Region will accept the debate and referendum plans at its spring meeting, and that New England will send to the August National Student Congress in Minnesota delegates backed by both informed and openly expressed student opinion on NDEA.

The Regional Congress chose Federal aid to education and the problem of disclaimer affidavits in the NDEA as theme issue over four other suggested topics.
