David Bachrach '59-2 of Eliot House and Brooklyn, N.Y., drowned yesterday when his wherry overturned at 5:35 p.m. in the Charles River near Stillman Infirmary.
Dr. David C. Dow, Middlesex County medical examiner, pronounced Bachrach dead at Mt. Auburn Hospital. The body was recovered after dragging operations by an MDC launch. Bachrach was 20 years old and had passed the University swimming test.
Rowing about 100 yards away, John P. Hamilton '63 saw Bachrach in the water but arrived too late to aid. Hamilton immediately dived several times in unsuccessful attempts at rescue. According to Hamilton, the accident occurred within 20 yards of the shore.
