The success of the proposed parietal hours change is unlikely, according to Dean Watson and Elliott Perkins '23, Master of Lowell House.
Watson commented yesterday that "it wouldn't surprise me a bit" if the move failed. Perkins, although he refused to consider the outcome of the issue, dismissed the idea of "horse-trading" hours from one day to another as "nonsense."
Watson predicted that the Faculty would completely disagree with the Student Council committee's stand that Friday is not a working night. He pointed out that in the past 30 years, student action has only changed the parietal hours twice. "The Faculty members simply don't like to be bothered," he added.
The committee will present its report to the entire Student Council next week. Council approval will be the first step towards getting the hours changed. A formal petition must then be submitted to Perkins, Secretary of the Master's Council, after which the Master's Council, Faculty Committee on Houses, Administrative Board, and the entire Faculty of Arts and Sciences must agree on the revision.
