The Dunster Funsters have gained a slight edge over other contenders in a tight race for the House fall sports championship, according to a survey of present football and soccer records.
Dunster's tackle football squad saved its undefeated status yesterday, fighting Lowell to a 6-6 stand-still, despite weak passing and a mediocre offense.
Rallying from behind late in the fourth quarter, the Funsters finally connected on a ten-yard pass from DeWard Manser to Charley Mann for their only score.
In the only other tackle game played yesterday, Kirkland crushed Winthrop, 16-0, on a safety and two touchdowns, all in the second half.
Encouraged by a two-point advantage gained from a blocked punt in the Puritan end zone, the Deacon offense suddenly woke up to score twice in the last period on a long run around their own right end by senior quarterback John Sears and an off-tackle plunge by Chris Norris set up by a 30-yard pass from Scotty Johnson to Larry Brown.
Soccer encounters of the day saw Adams hold an undefeated squad from Eliot House to a 0-0 tie, despite a strong attack by the Elephants throughout the game. Unable to field a team against Leverett, Dudley was compelled to forfeit.
On Tuesday, Quincy narrowly managed to score its second soccer victory when Winthrop was able to field only five players for the contest.
Winthrop completely overwhelmed a touch football squad from Quincy yesterday, 40-6, to lead the league with a five win, no-loss record. Kirkland, meanwhile, limited the Lowell Bellboys to one tally, for a 27-7 triumph.
In freshman inter-dorm football competition Weld South topped Massachusetts 15-6, Lionel overpowered Strauss North 26-0, Matthews edged Mower 14-13, Hurlbut and Thayer both defaulted, and Wigglesworth East forfeited to Hollis.
