Steven O. Awokoya, former Nigerian minister of education, opened a two-week visit to the Cambridge area yesterday. During his stay he will study teaching techniques at the University and at M.I.T.

Awokoya arrived in the United States four weeks ago to study the methods of science and mathematics education in leading schools and colleges. His visit is sponsored jointly by the Carnegie Corporation and the U.S. Office of Education.

During the first weeks of his stay, Awokoya conferred with officials in Washington and visited high schools and colleges there and in New York City.
