With a dubious assist from Saturday's torrential rain, which caused numerous fumbles and missed tackles, the Yardling eleven tallied three touchdowns in a second-half rally to defeat Dartmouth at Hanover, 18-6.

The key play of the game was a 30-yard punt return around the Indian right end by defensive halfback Bill Hatch scoring the first Crimson tally midway through the third period.

A few minutes later, right end Jim Frantz recovered a fumbled punt in the Dartmouth end zone to give the Yardlings their second touchdown, and what eventually proved to be the margin of victory.

Dartmouth's only score of the game came ten minutes through the first quarter. Capitalizing on a Yardling fumble on its own 15-yard line, the Indians made it first down and goal to go on the five, then pushed their way to a touchdown on a quarterback sneak by Greg Cook.

The Yardling offense stalled during the entire first half, failing to make a first down. Its defense permitted backs Bill King and Ernest Torres to make several substantial gains.

Left halfback Hobie Armstrong, the Yardlings' own Jim Brown, was the work-horse of the team, making several crucial first downs. Hatch, however, was the star of the day. In the fourth period, with fourth down and 20 yards to go, and the Crimson in punt formation, Hatch was trapped behind the line, but broke away around left end for first down deep in Dartmouth territory.

This play, and a Dartmouth fumble recovered on the Indian one-yard line by tackle Mike Briggs, set up the final Crimson tally, a left tackle option through the line by Terry Bartolet with one second remaining in the game.
