8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
Wilbur J. Bender '27, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, yesterday submitted his resignation, effective July 1. As Dean of the College, starting in 1947, and in his present office since 1952, Bender has worked in University Hall for 12 years.
Without mentioning the Dean's resignation, President Pusey last night at the Quincy House inaugural dinner praised Bender for his work as Dean of the College in strengthening the House system.
Upon his resignation this summer, Bender will become Associate Director of the Committee of the Permanent Charity Fund, Committee officials announced yesterday. The Boston foundation last year distributed over $700,000 to "health, social welfare, educational, and cultural" agencies and institutions in the metro-politan area.
Recently the Committee received from the estate of the late Albert Stone, Jr., a $17 million inheritance which nearly doubles its funds now available for distribution.
Bender to Study Grants
As Associate Director, Bender will "take an important part" in the studies and recommendations regarding grants of these additional funds. Many of these grants will support major new undertakings--including a juvenile delinquency project--for which adequate financing could not otherwise be obtained.
Born in Elkhart, Indiana, Bender received his B.A. magna cum laude in 1927, and his M.A. in 1930. In addition to his work in University Hall, he has been a Lecturer in History since the early 30's.
