Faculty Plans Long-Range Survey Of College Dining Hall Operations

Sweeping Changes Not Expected

A long range study of the College Dining halls and their operation will begin in the near future, Dean Bundy indicated recently. Recent changes in dining arrangements at Harkness Commons will almost certainly not be extended to the College, he added.

Graduate students now have the options of a 15-meal per week plan and a la carte service for the first time this Fall, in addition to the regular 21-meal plan. These experiments at Harkness probably will come up for discussion, Carle T. Tucker, Dining Hall director, asserted. "All avenues of inquiry will be explored."

Members of the Faculty will start their investigation of the College dining halls in the next week or two, Tucker stated. Although a professional consulting firm conducted an inquiry into Harkness last year, there is no indication that outside agencies will be called in for the College study.

Harkness lost $27,000 last year, and the large scale changes in service are intended to attract greater numbers of students. Food sales at the graduate dining hall have dropped steadily during the last few years with competition from Square restaurants.

Graduate school students may purchase beer at evening meals. Meals will be served continuously from 7:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.

If the committee does recommend any basic changes in the College dining hall arrangement, such changes will probably not be made this year. Tucker emphasized that any major alterations must be approved by the Deans and the Administrative Board.
