Moffitt Dies in Gym From Heart Attack

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

William E. Moffitt, associate professor of Chemistry since 1955, was stricken with a fatal heart attack while playing squash in the Hemenway Gymnasium Friday, Dec. 19.

A memorial service for Moffitt was held in Memorial Church, Monday, Dec. 22.

Moffitt, a leader in theoretical chemistry, wrote numerous scientific articles, particularly on the electronic structure of molecules, including mathematical analyses which contributed materially to the knowledge of the forces that bind atomic particles together in molecules.

Moffitt used mathematics to apply the principles of physics to problems in chemistry. He has been described as one of the few investigators in the world with broad enough knowledge of the three fields to employ them together in theoretical research.
