WASHINGTON, Sept. 28--Ted Williams wrapped up his sixth American League batting championship with a closing day flurry--a double and homer in four trips--while his Boston teammate and rival Pete Runnels went hitless in four chances.
Williams posted a .328 average to .322 for Runnels.
Williams' homer, a bases-empty blast in the seventh inning and his twenty-sixth of the season, broke a 4-4 tie and pushed the Red Sox to a 6-4 victory over the Washington Senators and sewed up third place for the Boston Club.
The final standings in the majors this year: MILWAUKEE, Sept. 28--Whitey Ford and Warren Spahn appeared the likely starters in Wednesday's World Series opener at County Stadium as the majors ended the regular season. Ford tuned up with a brilliant one-hit effort in six innings Friday night against Baltimore. Manager Casey Stengel of the New York Yankees is expected to make a formal pronouncement on Ford after Monday morning's workout at Yankee Stadium. Spahn went six innings against Cincinnati to earn his 22nd victory for the Milwaukee Braves.
