Joel Landau, favored by the New York Times to win both hurdles in the IC4A competition at Villanova, had little trouble qualifying for the 120-yard high hurdles finals yesterday.
In all, the varsity advanced three men to today's finals events which had qualifying tests yesterday.
John DuMoulin threw the hammer 173 feet, 9 inches to place fourth behind B.U.'s John Lawlor, whose throw of 198 feet, 8 inches was a new meet record. However, neither Jim Doty nor Dunc Johnson was able to advance beyond the trials.
Skip Pescosolido qualified for today's javelin final, although his throw of 180 feet, 10 inches placed him sixth among the six qualifiers. Manhattan's John McGorty broke the meet record with a toss of 229 feet, 2 1/2 inches.
Bob Holup of favored Villanova, considered Landau's chief competition in the high hurdles, ran a sterling 14.6 qualifying heat to lead the qualifiers.
Neither Lee Barnes in the 100 nor captain elect A1 Gordon in the 440 qualified for the finals.
Today, in addition to those who reached the finals in these events, the varsity will have Pete Reider in the 2-mile and Landau in the 220 low hurdles.
Last year, the varsity tied for fourth with 12 points on the strength of a hammer win by Pete Harpel, thirds in the low hurdles and two-mile by Landau and Reider, and a fifth in the two-mile by Dyke Benjamin.
