Some State Patrolmen May Be Mentally Ill

The shooting of a Cambridge patrolman earlier this week has been followed by an assertion that some policemen in this state are so mentally unstable that they are not permitted to carry revolvers. This situation is caused, City Manager John J. Curry said, by civil service regulations.

The patrolman, John D. Paine, held fellow officers at bay for an hour, and was critically wounded when his revolver fired as he was being subdued.
