Lacrosse Team Downs Tufts, 8-6

By John R. Adler

Apparently still in a state of shock after the Dartmouth debacle Saturday, the varsity lacrosse defense handed Tufts four shots on an empty cage during the second half, but managed to pull out an 8-6 victory on the Business School field yesterday.

Dick MacKinnon was very strong in the nets, turning away thirty shots, his high for the season. Many of the shots, however, were pure gifts by the defense, which obviously missed Jim Herscot's steadying hand, a hand badly sprained against Dartmouth. The clearing was wild and haphazard, and dropped balls in front of the cage resulted in one easy Tufts goal and three near-misses.

Nick Lamont scored a half-minute later, but Tufts tallied two goals to make the score 6 to 3, with a period remaining. Tufts struck again a 0:30 of the fourth quarter, but two more goals by Mallonee insured the victory.

The Crimson pulled to a 3-0 halftime advantage on the strength of markers by Pyle and Mallonee in the first quarter and a bouncing shot by Mallonee in the second. Dave Birch scored on a long screened shot at 2:29 of the third period, before MacKinnon's shutout was ruined when Bob Shaunessy dropped the ball in front of an empty cage on an attempted clear.

Later in the period, Mallonee stole the ball near the midfield line, ran in on two defenders, whirled to his left and fired a backhander past a surprised Jumbo goalie for a 5-1 advantage at 5:34.
