Golf Team Wins Shutout Victory

The varsity golf team took its first shutout victory in two years yesterday and boosted its season record to four wins and one loss, defeating Amherst, 7 to 0, and Tufts, 6 to 1. The match was played at the Charles River Golf Course.

Leading off, Perry Driggs took Amherst, 8-7, and Tufts, 4-2. Driggs took a commanding lead, with a 36 on the outgoing nine. Junior Frank Dodge had a shaky start, but went one under par on the last 15 holes and won, 6-5 and 4-3.

Number three man Paul Gruendeman was behind both opponents at the end of nine holes, but came back to win, 5-3 and 2-1. Captain Warren Iliff, whose game has been very much improved since the beginning of the season, defeated both opponents, 4-3 and two up.

Winning 7-6 and 5-3, Allan Steinert had three birdies and an eagle on four par five holes, and finished one over for the course. Bill Rose, who was an undefeated Freshman golfer last year, won his first varsity matches, 6-5 and 5-3. In last position, Sophomore Bob David split, defeating Amherst, 3-1, and losing to Tufts, 2-1. David started strongly, but fell behind when rain began to soak the course.

The Crimson's season record at this point is the best it has been in ten years, and puts the varsity in definite running for the Eastern Intercollegiates. The next match will be a triangular, against Brown and Princeton, to be played Friday at 2 p.m., at the Charles River Golf Course.
