The Crimson swimming team scored a startling 55-31 victory over Army in a dual meet Saturday at West Point. The team was considerably weakened as both team captain John Hammond and coach Harold S. Ulen were absent due to illness.
The Crimson performance was sparked by three sophomore standouts. Bruce Hunter won the 50-yard freestyle and went on to triumph in the 100-yard freestyle. Robert Komenda took second in the 440-yard freestyle, and Bill Schellstede turned in a first place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
Jim Perilman came in behind Schellstede to give the Crimson a sweep in the 200-yard butterfly. Only in the dives did the varsity show poorly, taking a third place. The Crimson then surged back to clinch the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke by the strong team of Jim Stanley and Douglas McCartney.
The freshman team also defeated West Point, 61-24. Fred Elizalde broke the freshman record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:23.9, which also surpassed the winning varsity time.
Freshman Bob Kaufmann, bettered the varsity time in the 100-yard freestyle with a finish in 51.6 seconds, one-tenth of a second faster than Hunter.
