Higginbottom's Last Minute Goal Deadlocks Favored Clarkson, 4-4

Duplicating its come-from-behind tie with B.U. last Monday, the varsity hockey team exploded for four goals in the final period-the last one by Bud Higginbottom at 19:25-to tie favored Clarkson 4 to 4 last night at Potsdam, N.Y.

Higginbottom's tying goal, and the scoreless sudden death period that followed, capped an almost incredible comeback. Throughout the first two periods the home town forces easily outplayed the varsity, took four times as many shots, and styymied the offense.

But the story was different in the third period. Sophomore defenseman Bob Anderson moved up to center the aggressive third line, and the second line backchecked ferociously.

Menwhile, the Crimson first line of Higginbottom, Dick Fischer and Dave Vietze again demonstrated its formidable scoring potential.

Fischer took the puck from Higginbottom at 3:46 and fired past goalie Armstrong from close range to make the score 2 to 1. Three minutes later, Vietze stopped a pass from Higginbottom at the blue line, akated in to the left and lifted a difficult 20-foot angle shot into the right corner of the cage.

As in the B.U. game, the opposition quickly regained the lead, this time on a shot by Mel Tomalty at 9:11. But just one minute later, sophomore Dave Crosby dug the puck out of a scramble in front of the cage and powered in past Armstrong. When Van Lammers broke loose from the pack at 11:56 and beat Pratt, the Crimson appeared to be Clarkson's 38th victim in 39 games at home.

A Clarkson penalty gave the varsity a chance for the power play, and with 35 second remaining, Higginbottom tied the game from six fee out.
