750 Register Bikes in Cambridge; Crackdown Threatens Confiscation

Nearly 750 bicycles have been registered at the firehouse near Memorial Hall since Cambridge police cracked down on cyclists a week ago, Chief of Police Daniel J. Brennan said yesterday.

Last Friday, the busiest day, 311 licenses were issued. Most of the registrants were University students, over 60 per cent of them girls, Vincent P. Galvin, deputy fire chief noted.

All Cambridge residents owning bicycles are required to register their vehicles, or risk confiscation and a $1 fine, according to a statement last week.

"All our policemen are watching for offenders on the streets, but so far everyone is complying with the law," a spokesman for the Cambridge police department commented.

A different opinion was expressed by fire department members aiding with registration. "I'm surprised some of the cyclists don't get killed. They break every rule in the book and a few not yet invented," one remarked.
