Freshmen Defeat Bullpups, 14-3, On 65-Yard Interception Return

By John R. Adler

A 65-yard touchdown runback of an intercepted pass by Yardling Captain Bill Swinford paced the Crimson to a surprising 14-3 victory over undefeated Yale yesterday, before a highly vocal crowd of 3000.

The fourth quarter dash broke up a frustrating afternoon of defensive football marked by aggressive lines and a fierce wind that stopped punts and hindered passing. Harvard maintained a narrow offensive superiority throughout the game, but had to rely on Swinford's interception and a 30-yard scoring dash by halfback John Shipman late in the fourth quarter to emerge on top of the scoring column.

Yale took a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter on a 13-yard field goal by Gordon Kaake. The play was set up by a dropped pass that a screened official called complete for a first down on the Harvard five-yard line. Thereafter, the only time the Bullpups threatened was during the second quarter, when the Crimson line halted a 74-yard march on the three-yard line.

Before the field goal, the two teams exchanged punts and pass interceptions, with a four-yard Crimson kick into the wind not aiding its cause. Three 15-yard penalties against Harvard during the second period kept play down at the wind-ward end of the field. It was at this time that the Elis showed their most sustained drives of the game, with left halfback Dick Wisner gaining most of the yardage that made him the game's leading rusher. Wisner managed 46 yards in fifteen carries, and gained all but 20 yards of the Yale ground game.

Stalled by Penalties

The freshmen twice penetrated into Bullpup territory during the third quarter, but were stalled by two offside penalties and an intercepted pass. That the Yardlings were determined to make their breaks in the fourth quarter was demonstrated on the first series of downs, as Yale gained but one yard, and punted.

A fumble and a seven-yard punt gave the Blue a first down on the Crimson 22-yard line, but an illegal receiver penalty quickly set them back fifteen yards. On the next play Swinford broke in front of a Yale receiver and gathered in the short pass.

The Oklahoma guard broke for the left sideline and outran an Eli defender, who tackled him as he crossed the goal line. Halfback Roy Williams ran for two points behind a winged T power play to make the score 8 to 3.

The Crimson continued to make its breaks for on the following play, a Yardling lineman pounced on a wind-blown kick-off before a Yale player touched it. After gaining five yards off tackle, Shipman slipped through left guard and raced thirty yards into the wind to score.
