Bowles to Visit Winthrop House For Three Days This December

Chester Bowles, former Governor of Connecticut and Ambassador to India, will visit Winthrop House on Dec. 9 through 11, David E. Owen '27, Master of Winthrop House, announced last night.

"We are delighted that this distinguished statesman accepted our invitation," said Owen. "During his stay, Winthrop will hold at least one evening meeting for members of the House, and perhaps a semi-public forum on foreign policy."

In addition, Bowles will eat at the Winthrop economics table, along with John Kenneth Galbraith, who is, Owen says, "one of Bowles' good friends."

Before entering government service, Bowles started a successful advertising agency. His important posts in Washington included OPA Administrator and Economic Stabilization Director.

Bowles was elected Governor of Connecticut in 1948, and following his defeat in 1950, President Truman appointed him Ambassador to India and Nepal, where he developed a major Point Four program.

The author of five books of foreign affairs, Bowles delivered the 1956 Godkin lectures.
