The Freshman Union Committee, an institution for 27 years, last night changed its name to the Harvard Freshman Council. The Committee passed the motion, first presented Oct. 30, by a vote of 18 to 6.
Two weeks ago, the Student Council passed a proposal recommending that the Committee reconsider the suggested change. They argued that tradition was behind the name, adding that the group's function was more as a House Committee than a Student Council.
Thomas E. Petri, President of the Union Committee, stressed that the only importance of the new name "is that it reflects the new, more representative role we now play in the Freshman class."
The new name, however, will not effect any change in the membership of the present group.
