Edward H. Martin '60 of Kirkland House and Lexington was elected captain of next year's cross country team last night. Wes S. Walton '60 of Winthrop House and Chicago became team manager.
Martin, a graduate of Lexington High School, was captain of the basketball, track, and cross country teams there. He was undefeated in cross country his freshman year here, and has run the 880 and the mile for the past two years. The new captain also ran in the Harvard-Yale team against an Oxford-Cambridge team in 1957.
The varsity's chances for victory next fall depend on the performance of this year's freshmen, returning lettermen, and several runners who have been on leave of absence, Martin said. The team will lose four seniors, but hopes to to equal or better this year's record of seven wins and one loss.
Although an injured Achilles tendon has handicapped him since last spring, Martin plans to work out this winter in order to be in shape for spring track and cross country.
