Freshmen Drop Opening Soccer Game to Exeter

Lack of self-assurance and a well-organized Exeter squad combined to bring a 2-0 downfall to the freshman soccer team at the Business School field yesterday.

In their first contest of the season, the Yardlings held their opponents to a scoreless first half. The Exonians broke loose in the second part of the game to score on a field goal and a penalty shot. An earlier penalty kick by Exeter in the first half was saved by the Crimson's goaltender, Larry Martin.

Coach Dana Getchell commented after the game that "the defeat may have done the freshmen a lot of good," especially because it brought out many faults. In yesterday's match, the freshmen, playing for the first time together with an outside team, seemed to lack the team co-ordination which comes with familiarity. Exeter, on the other hand, had the necessary control of the ball.

Fellowes Rodd, who started as right outside for the Yardlings, was taken out of the game in the first period with a back injury. Coach Getchell said that Rodd would probably be kept out of play for a week.

The next game for the freshmen will pit them against Boston University Saturday at 12 noon on the Business School field.

Representing the Crimson in the game were freshmen Philip Bernstein, left wing; Mark Swann, left inside; Bruce Johnstone, center forward; Ted Wendell, right inside; Shamus Malin, right wing; Dave Brannon, left halfback; Woody Spruance, center halfback; John Larkin, right halfback; Charles David and Sandy Cortesi, fullbacks; and Larry Martin, goal tender.
