The University is ferreting out illegal toxic gas and open unit refrigerators as part of its semi-yearly inspection of all student rooms.
The Grant-Hoffman Company, which rents one-third of all student refrigerators through Harvard Student Agencies has replaced sulfur dioxide models with refrigerators which operate on harmless freon gas.
Charles M. Olin '59, manager of HSA, stated that although a large per cent of the banned refrigerators installed by the HSA have been removed, more than 100 sulfur dioxide refrigerators still remain in student rooms.
Olin, who claimed that the Administration has been lax in enforcing its ban on the illegal type, recommended that "the University policy be of a more strict nature" and that "the flow of refrigerators be checked at the beginning of each year."
John D. Connors, Supervisor of Care-taking, defended the Administration by stating that his department was engaged in a detailed inspection of all student rooms. Any illegal refrigerators would be found and condemned, he said.
