Yovicsin Lauds Enthusiasm Demonstrated in Practices
The Crimson football team has "been getting a lot done in good fashion" in this week's practice sessions, according to Coach John Yovicsin. "They have real enthusiasm and have caught on to instructions quickly," he added.
The squad has stressed work on offense since their plays were stopped for most of the first three periods against Lehigh. "We aren't working on any new plays for Columbia, though" Yovicsin commented.
"Our defense in the Lehigh game was as consistent as it has been since I came here," the coach said. "We're working hard on pass defense because Columbia's quarterback, Donelli, is an excellent passer."
The balanced line wing-T and short punt formations are among the Columbia offensive combinations that will be new to the Crimson. The jayvees have been running plays out of these formations all week to get the varsity used to them.
Two members of the starting team are injured and may not play Saturday. Right end Stu Hershon had been completely out of action until last night, when he was able to do some jogging at practice. Yovicsin called his injury the most serious suffered by anyone on the team.
Larry Repsher sustained a foot injury last week. He worked out Tuesday night and last night but his status as a starter is still unknown.
Charlie Ravenel will start at quarter-back, according to Yovicsin. "He has won the position by his play against Lehigh and Cornell. The other boys know they'll have to win it back."
