Winthrop House is shifting the emphasis in its Ford grant program this year, Master David E. Owen announced yesterday. The House will invite an increased number of outstanding men in a variety of fields to be its guests.
"Not only does Winthrop plan to have more House guests," said Owen, "but, unlike last year, we are inviting them to stay with us for longer than merely overnight."
The guests will take their meals with the students, hold discussion meetings, attend special dinners in their honor, and meet with individual students by appointment.
Last fall Winthrop inaugurated its twopoint plan for use of the Ford money, and this basic program remains:
1. Individual students desiring financial aid "within reasonable limits" for original research projects may apply to the Master for small grants. Last spring four or five seniors received such grants to cover special expenses involved in writing their honors theses.
2. Interest groups within the House invite distinguished men in various fields to Winthrop for short visits. The Ford money pays for their room, board, and transportation. "Last year we didn't do as much as we should have in this field," Owen said. "We're trying to remedy that with our new shift in emphasis toward guests."
Winthrop will use a large part of its grant to finish paying for construction of a special section meeting room in the House. Built last year, this room was used by an Economics 1 section. This year a Social Sciences 1 section, an upper level economics course, and many tutorial groups are meeting there.
