BOSTON, Jan. 16--New York capitalized on Boston laxness for a 3-2 National Hockey League victory tonight decided by Larry Popein's late goal as the Rangers snapped on eight game winless streak. Both teams employed veteran goalies just reclaimed from the minors.

Popein collected his seventh goal of the season at 17:06 of the final period after New York twice had found the nets on unassisted efforts following Boston miscues.

The winning shot was from close range on a passout from Andy Barngate after Danny Lewicki's shot was checked and deflected.

Ski Meet

KITZBUEHEL, Austria, Jan. 16--The three-day International Hahnenkamm Ski Races, starting here tomorrow, are a star-studded dress rehearsal for the 1956 Alpine Ski World Championships at nearby Bad Gastein two weeks later.

However, snow conditions here were not too good, and training injuries were reported by several teams.

A record number of 112 men and 58 women from 22 nations of three continents are entered. They will compete in giant slalom, downhill and slalom.
