Straus South Teams Win Yard Intramural Title by 200 Points

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Straus South scored 811 1/2 points this year, almost 200 more than second place Thayer Middle, to capture the Freshman Dorm Athletic Championship. The Straus powerhouse's total was the highest ever recorded in freshman intramurals.

Defeated Yale Champions

Straus began the season by winning the football championship, and going on to defeat their Yale counterparts, 40 to 19. The team took the events in basketball, 17 and 5; hockey, nine and zero; softball, nine and one; and also won individual championships in rowing and tennis. Second places were scored in track and swimming. The Straus team was paced in softball by the pitching of Tommy Walker, who is a non-resident student associated with the Straus South dormitory.

This was the first year that the Straus South unit had taken the Intramural title. In addition to scoring the record number of points, Straus had the highest crude-man-average, and captured the most events ever won in a single year.

Manager Dick Steinzig said that the dorm's amazing record was a result of "unusually wide and intensive participation," and that Straus proctor Michael Maccoby "was one of the most active in the Yard."
