Shaw Tallies Two

After fighting to a stalemate in the first half, the varsity lacrosse team succumbed to a last period goal and was edged by a rough and powerful University of New Hampshire squad yesterday by a score of 3 to 2.

The Crimson defense, usually one of the mainstays of the team, was caught off guard in the opening minutes of play when UNH scored two quick tallies, one by Deware and one by Heins, who took a pass near the varsity goal and flipped the ball over his back into the nets.

Showing some of the same excellent midfield-attack coordination that marked last Saturday's victory over Penn, the Crimson offense then began a series of drives into New Hampshire territory that gained a 2 to 2 tie at halftime.

Mike Shaw opened the varsity scoring at 9.48 of the first period on a pass from Dub Mallonee, and followed with a second goal at 9:26 of the second quarter, assisted this time by Jerry Cotter. Shaw has now scored six goals for the Crimson during the last two games.

The third quarter remained scoreless, but in the final period the Crimson staged a play that seemed for a moment to have gained it the lead.

Defenseman John Baldwin took the ball all the way up the field to the New Hampshire goal and unloosed a shot that struck the top bar of the cage, rebounded onto the helmet of the UNH goalie, and then ricocheted off the side support of the goal. Amid the protests of the varsity team, the referee ruled that the ball had never entered the goal area.

Minutes later, Crimson goalie Dick MacKinnon was drawn out of the goal by a play in Harvard territory, and UNH's Stead drove in the winning shot on a pass from Heins.

The New Hampshire team, which boasted a strong, experienced midfield and a rough-playing defense, held off all further Crimson attempts to draw even.

The freshman squad crushed Nichols Jr. College yesterday, 17 to 6.
