Crimson Tennis Varsity Tops Williams Team, 6-3

Winning seems to have become a habit with the varsity tennis team, and despite the absence of Steve Gottlieb and Cal Place from their usual second and fifth singles spots, the Crimson defeated a strong Williams squad yesterday, 6 to 3, at Williamstown.

At first singles, Dale Junta relived the finals of last year's Intercollegiate Tennis Championships by defeating Carl Hirshman, runner-up to Junta in that event, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Junta duplicated his comeback performance against Steve Bank of North Carolina last Tuesday by rallying to win after dropping the first set.

Larry Sears moved up to second singles to fill in for Gottlieb. He defeated Tom Shulman, 6-3, 6-8, 6-1. At third singles Ben Heckscher was unable to cope with veteran Dave Leonard, losing 6-1, 6-2, and Phil Mills, playing in Heckscher's usual fourth singles position, bowed to Sam Dells, 6-2, 6-4. Mills normally plays sixth singles.

At this point, the Crimson's reserve of strong players, who are just off the top six, proved decisive. Al Goldman, at fifth singles, defeated Joe Turner, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, in a two and one-half hour marathon. In the sixth spot, Ned Weld topped Tom Davidson, 6-1, 6-2, to give the varsity a 4-2 margin in the singles.

The first doubles combine of Junta and Sears disposed handily of Hirshman and Turner, 6-0, 6-1, and at third doubles the team of Weld and Laurie Pratt gave the Crimson its final match, 7-5, 6-2, over Fleishman and Shulman. The only loss in doubles came at the second position where the pickup team of Heckscher and Mills dropped a close, three-set contest to Leonard and Dells, 9-7, 5-7, 10-8.

The two teams also played informal singles and doubles matches to complete an unofficial 15-match contest.

Also at Williamstown yesterday, the freshman tennis team continued in its winning habits, defeating the Williams freshmen, 7 to 2.
