Anyway you look at it, tomorrow's outdoor Heptagonal Championships at Yale figure to be a three-way tooth and nail battle between Yale, Cornell, and the varsity.
Yale beat the varsity 71-69 last weekend, but the result was hardly conclusive. The varsity, on the other hand, whipped Cornell, but that was without the Big Red's Bo Roberson.
Only the hammer figures to be a push-over for the Crimson, since the varsity's Pete Harpel and John DuMoulin reign supreme in the league.
Pete Reider will have his hands full in both the mile and the two-mile, for Rod Zwirner of Princeton has beaten him in both. In the mile, there is an outside chance that Dartmouth's Doug Brew could scramble the picture, if he deides to double with the 880. Zwirner, Reider, and Brown's Ed Sullivan are the top three in the two-mile.
Phil Williams must figure somewhere in the mile field, possibly fourth, while Dyke Benjamin appears at least the fourth best two-miler in the league.
Dick Wharton appears ready to upset his nemesis, Cornell's John Ingley, in the 440, while Sandy Dodge is favored in the 100.
Joel Landau will have his hands full with rival Dick Fisk from Yale, who beat him last week in the high hurdles, but he appears to have only Roberson to fear in the lows. The varsity's Dave Rosenthal could finish as high as second in the latter.
Tony Gianelly has gotten off the best discus throw in the league, and there appears little reason why he cannot duplicate it tomorrow to win the discus title.
The high jump is a toss-up between John deKiewiet, Cornell's John King, and Penn's Andy Wohlgemuth, all of whom tied in the triangular meet two weeks ago.
Carl Pescosolido places somewhere among the top five javelin-throwers, but he will have to match his best of the season to place high.
