McGinnis Pitches Crimson Nine To 13-3 Victory at Northeastern

By Richard T. Cooper

The varsity baseball squad not only strengthened its reputation as a "hitting team," but displayed some unusually sharp fielding yesterday as it hung one on Northeastern, 13 to 3. Bob McGinnis was the winning pitcher.

The Crimson started the game with three runs on three hits and did not relax the pressure. After Tom Bergantino flied out to left, Bob Cleary took first on a single to left, second and third on John Simourian's double, Both Cleary and Simourian trotted in moments later after Bob Hastings lifted the first of two three-run homers over the fence.

Cleary got three more base hits, scoring once ahead of Hastings' second home run, this one in the sixth. Simourian also came in on balls. In the seventh, Simourian again drew a walk, stole second, and was driven in by Matt Botsford.

Hastings added a single, a stolen base, and a walk to his pair of home runs, to move his average up near that of Simourian, who leads the Greater Boston League. Another encouraging sign at the plate was the apparent return of Bergantino's batting eye. The Crimson third baseman got a single, a double, and a triple, scored twice, drove in two, and walked once in six times at bat.

The varsity scored 13 runs on 13 hits, helped considerably by the more than half a dozen walks tendered by the Husky pitching staff.
