The M.I.T. administration asserted yesterday that it firmly supported the broad scope of activity of the Institute's student government.
Chancellor of the Institute Julius A. Stratton told a press conference that the administration "recognized the student's need for areas of responsibility and authority" in order to gain "total education."
Arnold E. Armstutz, president of the undergraduate association, explained at the news luncheon that the student government possesses the constitutional power to investigate and oversee student activities. The association's recommendation to the faculty concerning judicial action are "always followed," said Armstutz.
The student government, Armstutz clarified, is an undergraduate hierarchy headed by the Institute Committee.
