Boston College defeated Yale last night 11 to 2, as B.U. downed Northeasten 10 to 3.
The varsity hockey team is repentant.
Although the sextet was sadly disappointing in its opening loss to Providence last week, the members of Cooney Weiland's squad are taking steps now to make sure that the 6-3 defeat was only an accident.
Last Saturday Weiland held an unprecedented weekend practice session; on Sunday, several members of the squad went down to the Icehouse and skated for hours voluntarily. And yesterday, the squad took in the season's first blackboard session to discuss positions, methods of offense and in particular, defense, the team's greatest worry.
Meanwhile, the four other top-ranking Eastern hockey teams--Clarkson, R.P.I. and Boston College--likewise surprised their fans with opening game losses. While R.P.I. edged Clarkson, 6-5, Yale came back from a Middlebury defeat to beat R.P.I., and Boston College was shocked by Brown, 6-3. So it's still very open in the East.
In recent daily practices, first-line wing-man Bob McVey has been shifted back to defense on several occasions and may be used to bolster that department in this weekend's matches against Norwich and Middlebury. Speedy sophomore Paul Kelley has replaced McVey beside Cleary and Guttu. The game against Norwich on Friday should be closer than everyone predicts.
