The Colorado-bound varsity hockey team received a stroke of good luck yesterday when it drew Michigan as its first round opponent in the NCAA hockey tournament starting next Thursday. The Crimson will play the Huskies Friday night, while favored Colorado College meets Clarkson Thursday night.
Of the two Western teams, Michigan and Colorado, Colorado is definitely the stronger sextet. It finished far ahead of the Huskies in the Western Hockey League and is heavily favored to unseat Michigan, the defending champion.
The first round winners will meet Saturday night at the Broadmoor Ice Palace for the championship, while the losers play for consolation honors Saturday afternoon.
On its last trip to Colorado, in 1955, the Crimson sextet lost its opening game to Michigan, the eventual winner of the tournament, by a 7-3 count. The varsity then came back, however, to defeat St. Lawrence 6 to 3 and take unofficial third place in the final standing.
