Alumni Body Mobilizes for Fund Meeting

Some 50 prominent alumni gathered here yesterday in a major step toward completing the organization of the Program for Harvard College.

The men, including leaders from all the major alumni districts of the country, came to hear a general discussion of the Program by President Pusey, Dean Bundy, members of the faculty, Alexander M. White '25, general chairman of the drive, and several others.

The discusions will be continued this morning and will end in the early afternoon.

Not since 1919, when the late Thomas W. Lamont '92 assembled a simlar group for the Harvard Endowment Fund, has this type of meeting been held to mobilize Harvard's capital fund-raising forces.

"These are all men who will be leaders in the drive in their own areas," William Bentinck-Smith, assistant to President Pusey explained yesterday. "But they have not been closely wedded to the problem and they needed to be briefed on its details."

The briefing started at 9:30 a.m. yesterday with a two and one-half hour conference in the Kirkland House Junior Common Room. The present status and needs of the college were explained by such speakers as Pusey, White, Charles H. Taylor, master of Kirkland House, Charles P. Whitlock, senior tutor of Dudley House, and a panel of undergraduates.

Prominent Alumni

Yesterday afternoon prominent alumni including Thomas S. Lamont '21, vice-chairman of the Program, Henry U. Harris '23, chairman of the Special Gifts Committee, Philip H. Theopold '25, chairman of the National Alumni Committee, and Charles C. Cabot '22, chairman of the Foundations Committee, explained plans for conducting the drive.

This morning's conference will be held in the Faculty Room in University Hall with Dean Bundy moderating. Wilbur K. Jordan, president of Radcliffe, Dana L. Farnsworth, drector of University Health Services, and J. Petersen Elder, dean of the GSAS, will be among the speakers.
