A conference on teaching the nature of Communism and another on the growing importance of political geography will highlight the 1957 Harvard Summer School, Summer School Director William Y. Elliott, Leroy B. Williams Professor of History and Political Science, has announced.
The conference on Communism will stress the development of an adequate program which will enable students better to evaluate Communism in relation to American institutions. Practicing educators, including Francis Keppel '38, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will participate.
Under the chairmanship of Dr. Edward A. Ackerman '34, the conference on political geography will measure the role of political geography in education and in the international utilization of basic natural resources. Among the other special lectures this summer will be a series on the dramatic arts, which Elliott hopes will include visitors to the Cambridge Drama Festival.
This summer there will also be another expansion of the joint program sponsored by the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Arts and Sciences, combining study of subject matter and materials suitable for teaching in secondary schools.
