Pete Boyce continued his excellent fencing as he took two of three bouts in the foil, but outside of Doug Runnels in the sabre, and Doug Fitchen in the epee, the varsity fencing team showed little in its convincing 18 to 9 loss to Penn yesterday afternoon.
Boyce's two wins were all the varsity could pick up in the foil as both Captain Hubert Hocutt and Mike Klapper lost all three of their bouts. Penn took this division 7 to 2.
The Crimson made its strongest showing in the sabre, losing only 5 to 4. Besides Runnels' two victories, Dave Silbert and Mitch Thomas each won one of their three bouts.
In the epee, where the Crimson was expected to make the most of a supposed Quaker weakness, Penn outfought the varsity 6 to 3. Fitchen picked up two victories, but Bob Scrivner could take only one of his bouts, while Bill Chapple was shut out in his three.
This afternoon the varsity will try to get back into the win column when it fences Princeton at Princeton. The Tigers must be favored on the strength of its earlier win over Penn.
